All I Really Want in a Song

Today I realized something that sort of blew my mind. Though I LIKE tons of great music, I only LOVE a handful of songs, but I never really saw a common thread between them until today.

I had never heard of The Ronettes until I was searching for vocal isolations, and found a version of their song Baby I Love You without backing track. Interested, I listened to the original version and was completely blown away by the wall of sound production that picked up steam throughout the track. I was immediately reminded of one of my favorite songs of all time, Hellhole Ratrace by Girls. In thinking about that my mind jumped to Wilco, then onto Mogwai, Maserati, and Fuck Buttons.

At the end of the rabbit hole, I realized that all I really want in a song is a build to something disorienting and all-encompassing. Here are a few of my favorite tracks that fit this mold (playlist below):

The Ronettes - "Baby I Love You"
Wilco - "At Least That's What You Said"
Girls - "Hellhole Ratrace"
Maserati - "Goodbye M'Friend, Goodbye"
Mogwai - "Remurdered"
Daft Punk - "Contact"
Fuck Buttons - "Sweet Love For Planet Earth"
